Most startups don't survive their first few years. The odds are stacked against them: the market shifts, the funding dries up, the idea loses its edge. Yet here we are. Ten years in. Nearly 200 incredible people strong. And still growing. Still thriving.
A decade ago, gridX was nothing more than an idea born between two friends, Andy and David, while cycling through the vast landscapes of Ecuador – imagining a cleaner, smarter and more interconnected energy grid. They saw a world where technology could seamlessly weave renewable energy into the fabric of a sustainable tomorrow.
Today, that dream has evolved into a powerhouse of around 200 incredibly talented people spread across Germany – primarily located in our vibrant offices in Munich and Aachen – building the very software that orchestrates Europe's digital energy transition.
But if you look closely at what we’ve built over the last decade, technology isn't the only thing we are proud of. It's the people – the all-stars of energy – who are the real threads of this tapestry. The stitches that hold every line of code, every partnership and every milestone together. As we cross this ten-year mark, we're looking back at the culture we've woven with intention, the memories that define us and why putting people first will always be the thread we never cut.

Over the past decade, we have woven together a culture where an international team doesn't just work alongside each other but genuinely thrives together. That richness comes alive during our legendary ‘Culture Nights’ – a beloved gridX tradition where colleagues cook traditional dishes from their home countries, share stories and connect through the universal language of food. Our kitchens become a quilt of nations: vibrant, warm and wonderfully layered.
Beyond celebrating our global roots, we understand that ground-breaking innovation requires a rested mind. Because the tech industry can move at a dizzying pace, we dedicate an entire month each year to hitting pause. During our Mental Health Month, we focus heavily on mindfulness, foster open conversations about mental health and ensure everyone has the tools they need to protect their well-being. Because no great fabric perfectly holds together under constant strain.
Furthermore, our impact doesn't stop at the digital energy grid. Through our organized ‘Social Days’, gridX employees regularly roll up their sleeves to give back locally – whether that means spending time volunteering at animal shelters, painting local kindergartens or supporting our elderly neighbors in the community.

Living our values: The 10th birthday bash
In the Munich office, placed parallel to the kitchen, hung a simple string – marked at one end with 2016 and at the other with 2026. Everyone was invited to take a small wooden clip, write their name on it and hang it on the year they joined gridX. The early years were sparse, if not empty. By 2026, the string was crowded, alive, layered. It was one of the simplest visuals that showed how far gridX has come. And somehow the most quietly powerful. A decade of growth, gathered in one place – proof that we are indeed growing, that we carry our history with us, and that we are facing forward together.
That spirit set the tone for everything that followed.
To celebrate our official 10-year milestone, we put our daily tasks aside and brought all of these cultural elements together for a synchronized celebration that reflected our four core values in full colour.
In Aachen, the team tackled an extensive, high-intensity outdoor scavenger hunt marathon across the historic city streets. It was the ultimate real-world manifestation of our value to Get shit done. Faced with tricky urban riddles, the teams collaborated flawlessly, refusing to stop until every single code was cracked.
Meanwhile, in Munich, the team put their collective intelligence to the test under a ticking clock inside local escape rooms – decoding ancient secrets as wizard apprentices or tracking down jungle treasures.
Having escaped with time to spare, they headed straight to a local park to embrace our value to Come as you are. The afternoon became a beautiful space for everyone to show up as their authentic selves, whether that meant testing their balance on a shaky slackline, jumping into competitive ball games or simply lounging on blankets alongside the youngest all-stars – parents and bubs also joined the celebration.
As the sun began to set, both offices transitioned to their respective terraces for an evening dedicated to our value: Appreciate with all your heart. With premium catering, a fully staffed professional cocktail bar and fantastic music, the terraces transformed into a melting pot of shared stories spanning our ten-year history. Clinking glasses under a spectacular, synchronized sundowner across Germany, it was incredibly clear that even across two cities, our culture is one continuous thread.

Ten years in, one truth hasn't changed: we grow with intention, and people always come first. What sets gridX apart is a mix of deep team spirit, genuine appreciation and an absolute, non-negotiable curiosity. What began as a platform to connect, monitor and control distributed energy resources has grown into the go-to solution for flexible energy – a quilt that kept adding new squares under Tobias and Tim, who wove a spark into a company of nearly 200 people. And now, under Anne and Jonas, a new square is being added, carrying the same restless ambition that started it all on those Ecuadorian roads.
